YourCodeBuddy / LocalBuff
LocalBuff connects chat models to PC tools through the YourCodeBuddy harness.
LocalBuff runs on the machine and exposes the same tools a coding agent uses: read and write files, run commands, wait for output, keep a journal of what it did. The bridge is the front door: instead of a vendor's cloud reaching into your computer through an installer, a chat window you already use talks to the local process, which decides what it is allowed to touch.
It works with Grok today; ChatGPT support is the piece being built now, which is why this entry says in development and has no download. The interesting design problem is not the tool list, it is the permissions: a model that can run a command can delete a folder, so the harness keeps the workspace boundary, the command allowlist and an undo journal on the local side where the model cannot edit them.
- Local tool server: file edits, commands, background jobs, checkpoints and an undo journal.
- Chat-side bridge, so the model is chosen in the chat window rather than in another app.
- Permissions and the workspace boundary stay on the machine, out of the model's reach.
- Grok today; ChatGPT wiring in progress. No download while that is unfinished.
